OT: NCAA Hockey Championship Game
Not sure if anyone can stomach to watch, but the NCAA Hockey Championship Game is currently airing on ESPN2 (and in Spanish on ESPN3 as many of us are familiar with after Thursday). Minnesota State defeated Minnesota, 5-1, in the other semifinal game on Thursday.
The score is still 0-0 halfway through the first. Both teams looking good so far, but Minnesota State seems to have a slight edge. Also of note Minnesota State's goalie, Dryden McKay, was awarded the Hobey Baker yesterday.
Minnesota State has never won a national title before, while Denver has won eight. One more for Denver would tie Michigan's record of nine, so I think the team to root for is obvious. Go Purple Cows!
Mankato just scored so it is 1-0.
I'm rooting for Moses to free the Hebrew slaves.
Moses was like a 40 pt underdog but won it going away!
Everyone just ignoring 1-seed Egypt in the Mideast bracket.
his fight song was interesting. not much for the drum corps, but catchy nevertheless:
let myyyyy
people
goooooo!
Too soon
1-0 Mankato after one.
Moses has been outed.
"O/T"
Nope, I'm totally not dead inside
Arena Announcer: [Opposing team] is back to full strength.
Yost: They still suck!
*still disappointed*
Still 1-0 midway through the second. Mankato just killed off a power play.
Moses getting ready to dump Anne Baxter for Yvonne Decarlo.
Still 1-0 after two.
Moses is going to take his shoes off and stand on some holy ground.
I can't watch this because I feel like we could beat both of these teams in a best of 7. Sigh. Hopefully Mankato wins this one
It looks like its a good game but I can't stomach to watch it in its entirety. I've been switching back and forth. We could beat both these teams. We beat Mankato early in the season. We should have beaten Denver Thursday but it wasn't meant to be.
It's like going to the wedding of your ex and your ex-best friend.
It's like watching their wedding night.
Gotta cheer for the mavericks since I don’t want DU to tie for most Nattys, tough pill to swallow knowing we’re better than both
So according to MGOBLOG mankato is playing moses for the national title?
Ill take Moses? If the other team is in red Im pretty sure he has a trick up his sleeve to score.
Game is tied at 1 with 14:26 left. Denver is on a power play.
Mankato killed off the power play and then Denver scored an even strength goal before Mankato could get settled. 2-1 Denver 12:27 left in the 3rd.
A would be Denver goal was called off for goalie interference. Still 2-1 11:08 to go.
It looked like it took a long time for the Mankato player to leave the box on that second goal.
Anne Baxter and Yvonne Decarlo are having their catfight.
7:28 to go. Still 2-1
3-1 Denver Scored with 6:26 left on a 2-1 breakaway. Things are not looking good for Mankato and our lead in natties could evaporate.
This should be US
:((((
My thoughts. Word for word.
Makes one physically ill.
3:14 to go. Empty net
The red smoke is coming.
4-1 Denver ENG with 2:32 left.
Sucks that Denver has tied us for championships, but they've earned it.
Since 2000:
Denver: 6 Frozen Fours -> 4 Championships
Michigan: 7 Frozen Fours -> 0 Championships
Ugh. Being a Michigan fan is a lifetime of pain. So much goodness, but so much less greatness.
EDIT:
North Dakota: 10 Frozen Fours -> 2 Championships (Currently sit at 8 total, 1 behind Michigan and Denver).

This is BRUTAL.
0 National Championships to show for our 7 Frozen Fours in about 20-ish seasons.
In that same time span:
2005: Softball CHAMPIONS
2011: Hockey runner-up
2013: M Basketball runner-up
2015: Softball runner-up
2018: M Basketball runner-up
2019: Baseball runner-up
Sigh...lots of close but no cigar. Nice to get there, but makes it that much more painful when we can't complete it.
I don’t believe there’s another school in the country with as many national runner-up finishes across all sports as Michigan.
We're constantly being brought to the moment of ecstasy only to be let down. National championshipus interruptus.

NCAA Championships since 1989
Men's Basketball 1989
Field Hockey 2001
Football 1997
Men's Gymnastics 1999, 2010, 2013, 2014
Women's Gymnastics 2021 (+ 2022 looks like a possibility)
Ice Hockey 1998
Softball 2005
Men's Swimming & Diving 1995, 2013
Ugh. Thats hard to read. How do you covert 6 frozen fours into 4 national titles? I swear Michigan athletics cant catch a break.
:(

Expanding this out. The only others to come close to Michigan's appetite for pain are at the bottom. Maine hasn't been in like 15 years anyway, but had a real rough early 2000s. Hopefully Notre Dame never gets a championship. Denver is incredibly efficient when they make it to the big stage.
Since 2000:
Boston College 10 FF, 4 champs
North Dakota 10 FF, 2 champs
Michigan 7 FF, 0 champs
Denver 6 FF, 4 champs
Duluth 6 FF, 3 champs
Minnesota 6 FF, 2 champs
Maine 5 FF, 0 champs
Notre Dame 4 FF, 0 champs
Shit... DU is gonna tie Michigan for most national titles... and in far less years.
Game over 5-1.
Time to free some slaves.
A little lambs blood over the door ought to do it.
So discouraging to have what was clearly the best team in the country and come up short.
For the first time since 1951, Michigan does not stand alone the standings of most NCAA titles. After beating BC in 98, Michigan had nine and North Dakota trailed with 7. Denver had five at the time, but they have won 4 in the past 18 years. Boo.

I think we can safely say that Denver is a hockey school. And that's about it.

Denver has more skiing NCAA titles than anyone else. Add in a lacrosse title a few years ago and their 34 NCAA team titles is 13th best amongst all schools in history (Michigan is in 11th with 39).
I wonder where they get their numbers. Michigan has 57 team titles
I can see where they'd do well in skiing. : ) Lacrosse seems geographically and culturally odd. Hockey a little bit, too, honestly.
Overall that school ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Denver ) is a big blank slate in my head. I have no sense of who goes there, what it's like, etc.
If we would have just cleared the puck twice, we could have won.
Denver winning 5-1 and now winning titles in 4 of their last 6 frozen fours is like salt in Thursday's wound. Should've been us
This team will make the tournament next year. Now a long 11 month wait to see if we can finally catch a break

Re falling short. Play better!
