Michigan Cheerleading wins National Championships!

ICYMI years ago, the Cheer and Dance teams are officially Varsity sports. Dave Brandon when he was AD brought them aboard in 2012-13.

This came after a national runner-up finish in 2011-12 when the Cheer team funded itself. Becoming Varsity resulted immediately in a National Championship in 2013 in the inaugural season of Varsity cheer.

Michigan then won the National Championship again in 2014......then in 2015.......and again in 2016.

The last two years the team came up short. The National Championships that Michigan won were in the Coed Intermediate category as the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) has different categories and competitions.

Well, this year Michigan was not only in Coed Intermediate but also in Division 1A Coed Gameday. A performance that includes dancers, Michigan Marching Band members and the twirlers.

And the Wolverines were gold in both.

Michigan won their 5th and 6th National Championships in the program's 7 season history at the Varsity level.

First it was the Coed Intermediate squad that won the program's 5th National Championship in that event.

Michigan finished with a team score of 98.0917, edging out second place East Carolina (96.5792)

The day wasn't done.

In the Division 1A Gameday competition, Michigan won the National Championship over the likes of SMU, Clemson, NC State, South Carolina and Houston.

The Wolverines just barely eeked it out as you can see below in the final standings-

  1. Michigan - 96.7459
  2. SMU - 96.6584
  3. NC State - 94.7583
  4. Clemson - 94.5917
  5. South Carolina - 91.4958

We're a cheerleading school!!

Congrats, team, on a job well done - so many times in 7 years!

And to be honest, I didn't even know that Michigan competed in cheerleading...

Except it is because it's defined as a Varsity sport by the athletic department.

Their schedules are insane. My friend was on the 2016 National Championship team and captained the team last year. They have to practice and train and get ready for competition and then have to go cheer on other teams in addition to their own competition.

All kinds of awesome.  Congrats!

Recently met one of our varsity cheerleaders, current public health student and pre-med.

Michigan Difference!

Maybe it's my screen (but I don't think so): in the first picture in front of the hotel, the maize of the uniforms worn by the Michigan women looks right, but the men in the background look like they're wearing something closer to yellow than to true maize.

In the beach picture it's not so easy to see the difference, as the contrast between the bright blue sky/ white sand and the Michigan cheer team in the deep shade of a passing cloud cause the picture to not "pop".

How is cheerleading judged as a "sport?" Volume? Dance routines? Who can make the highest pyramid without wobbling? Who has the sunniest disposition and whitest teeth?

Similar to figure skating in that there are required stunts that must be incorporated in each routine. Teams must do the minimum requirements and are allowed to incorporate more difficult stunts and pyramids which can help result in a higher score if they hit.

I know people think it's a joke, cheerleading. I did too until my daughter started 10 years ago. It's intense and I'd wager most on this board couldn't survive their conditioning practices..:)
