John U. Bacon puts Harbaugh 80% staying, 20% NFL
https://twitter.com/Johnubacon/status/1346219493140410369
Since many have asked: Unclear exactly how much interest NFL teams have in him, but right now I'd say 80% chance Harbaugh will return to Michigan, and 20% to the NFL. Harbaugh is flying back to Michigan today. If it starts stretching out the odds shift gradually to the NFL.

Why does everyone always fuck up the grain of salt reference?
January 4th, 2021 at 6:05 PM ^
Object-verb-tense agreement under stress is harder than it looks, me thinks.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:09 PM ^
Well, when in Rome.
January 4th, 2021 at 9:02 PM ^
Do as the Remans do?
January 4th, 2021 at 6:39 PM ^
How so? Seems like he used it properly to me. “With a grain of salt” idiom meaning to accept some news or report with skepticism, thus “heaps of salt” would equate to “a lot of skepticism”
January 4th, 2021 at 6:16 PM ^
Sounds like his source is Maizen...
January 4th, 2021 at 5:34 PM ^
Doesn't this undermine the whole "I love Michigan" thing? "I guess I'll stay" isn't a great attitude to have as a head coach. Either you're all in or you're not.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:54 PM ^
Who's got it better than us?!
JH: Good question, lemme find out.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:14 PM ^
This is a very underrated joke.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
This doesn’t really help. I mean, he could be 90/10, 80/20..10/90...we’re still here.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:35 PM ^
Shouldn’t Harbaugh have flown back to Michigan yesterday if he was supposedly meeting with his staff today?
Sounds like Harbaugh had an interview in LA before making the trip back to AA.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
Yeah, this means nothing. It's going to be hilarious when he comes back to AA, signs the contract, and acts like he had no idea why this was such a big deal. This wouldn't surprise me a bit. He is a total whack job and him just being on vacation and ignoring everything is something he would totally do.
For the record, i'm not a fan of this anymore and think he should have at least made a statement, but again, that is Jim Harbaugh.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:01 PM ^
You’re right with the part about if he stays. He will totally play the “I want to be here, I was never going anywhere, just focused on the task, getting the team better one day at a time”.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:08 PM ^
It’s possible there is no story. Maybe he has already signed his contract and is just on vacation. All coaches do take vacations after the season. Maybe he’s been talking to coordinators and plans to meet with his coaches once he’s back and everything is in place.
Everyone assumes this is a clown show but maybe there is nothing to report because nothing is going on. Right now everyone is just speculating. No one outside of JH and WM really know
January 4th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
It’s not only possible, it’s the most likely outcome.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:30 PM ^
Yeah but.....why not announce a signed contract and end all the speculation? Speculation never ends well.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:42 PM ^
If the contract was already signed then it would’ve already been announced. No need to call a press conference and make a big show out of a simple contract extension.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:37 PM ^
I have it at 92.3% Harbaugh stays. 7.6% NFL, and .1% he retires just to get a betting line out there.
These numbers are more valid than Bacon's because they are coming later in the day.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:47 PM ^
Well, I will certainly accept them as the most probable and scientific...
... until someone provides a breakdown including a hundredths place.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
Sweet. So the head coach of our team isn't really 100% in.
Dude should have been fired weeks ago.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
You sound like a man with experience(s).
January 4th, 2021 at 6:03 PM ^
Lol yes, i've been on both sides. I'm sure most people have
January 4th, 2021 at 5:42 PM ^
That it's even 20% NFL means he's gone. Unless he gets no decent offer like the Chargers or Lions, both of which have big advantages to him.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
What does the last sentence mean?
January 4th, 2021 at 7:05 PM ^
Going to the Chargers, they have a stud QB. And gets to return to California.
Going to the Lions, he doesn't have to yank kids from school, and can commute.
Did I really have to explain that ?
January 4th, 2021 at 5:42 PM ^
Why on earth would the Michigan fan base want a coach who is 80% committed to building a consistently winning and national championship contending program? Please explain this to me
January 4th, 2021 at 5:46 PM ^
Yep, totally agree. How can anyone want Harbaugh back after this?
He should have been fired weeks ago. This program has become such an embarrassment.
January 4th, 2021 at 11:24 PM ^
Yes, because Bacon's assessment is exactly what Harbaugh's brain is thinking. Harbaugh is precisely 20% interested in the NFL.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
Well....because this completely random % was just randomly made up by a guy that said he really had no idea and was just speculating? It isn't like JH said he was 80% committed. Get a grip.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:43 PM ^
Thank you!
January 4th, 2021 at 5:43 PM ^
Come on John! It's much closer to 79.....21!
January 4th, 2021 at 10:39 PM ^
Bacon likes round numbers.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:44 PM ^
Can you imagine working another year at a job you’re trying so desperately to leave? Don’t expect to go 0.500 next year boys.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:44 PM ^
So John U is speculating as much as the rest of us.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:45 PM ^
Each day this goes on it makes Jim's job as Michigan's head coach that much harder. He prefers not to coach here any more. That is being made crystal clear to everyone with each passing day (players, coaches, recruits, opposing coaches). I don't know how you bring him back now. If this team already quit on him in 2020, what are we honestly expecting going forward?
January 4th, 2021 at 6:09 PM ^
Donovan Edwards only smiled when asked if he signed on for Harbaugh. What does that tell you? Milton will go be a tight end somewhere, McNamara looks like a solid backup to me, McCarthy a newbie. Oy! Need a younger, energetic recruiter who can motivate, teach, and game plan. Is Mike Tomlin available? :)
January 4th, 2021 at 8:07 PM ^
No way does Milton go one to be a tight end somewhere. I have never seen such a physically imposing player shy away from contact as much as him. He ran in slow motion crouched down just waiting to be hit.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:47 PM ^
Don’t want to start a new thread, but I am genuinely curious about the fanbase’s opinion on what you would like to see happen with Harbaugh. I made a simple strawpoll.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
This whole thing is asinine. Why is this an option?
If the guy doesnt want to be here 100% end this shit. I hate to the Michigan thing and bring Bo into it, but didnt he say "No man is more important than the team, no coach is more important than the team"?
January 4th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
This is getting fucking absurd. Every "expert insider" has conflicting opinions. I know JUB knows his stuff, but this is not a good development for Michigan.
I'm firmly in the camp now of, I don't want him back. Frankly, I think it would be toxic for the program if he does come back. He clearly is not committed to being here, why should Michigan allow him to be?
What player is going to want to play for a coach that pandered for another job before begrudgingly return to coach their team? What recruit is going to sign on knowing the head coach is willingly looking for other offers so he can bail?
It isn't like, Jim was just doing his thing at Michigan when all of a sudden an offer he couldn't pass up comes along. He is actively pursuing NFL jobs and keeping Michigan on the hook until he either gets the offer he wants, or can't find anything better. That is total bullshit, and no Michigan coach should be kept on staff if that is their position. Coach the team if you want to be here. Leave if you're looking for something else. He's making his current team and alma mater look like the desperate girl at the dance, and that is bullshit.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:15 PM ^
Maybe call his bluff, don’t extend, live with a disaster next year, save the buyout $, and spend time starting now looking for new leadership. Hard to think, I was ecstatic when he came here and still very satisfied until 2018 Ohio game. Now, time to go. Who’s got it better then us? Rhetorical question.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:57 PM ^
There is an 80% chance I shit my pants and a 20% chance that I change said pants
January 4th, 2021 at 5:57 PM ^
FFS this is maddening. Conflicting reports from multiple “insiders” no one knows shit at this point. Simple as that.
January 4th, 2021 at 5:58 PM ^
Falcons, Texans, Jets, Lions, Chargers, Jaguars
Plenty of opportunities for Jimmy. See Ya.
January 4th, 2021 at 6:20 PM ^
Lions: awkward fit living in Ann Arbor, Texans: ever been to Houston? Even the best parts. Glorified cow town. Jets: I live in NY, media would eat him alive, he’s now Adam Gase 2.0. Jags want Meyer not a washed up Harbaugh. Chargers: this is his favored landing spot I am sure and could happen.
January 4th, 2021 at 7:43 PM ^
Lions: awkward fit living in Ann Arbor,
I actually don't know if that would be awkward. I think a lot of people would wish him well.
January 5th, 2021 at 12:05 AM ^
That’s the worst description of a Houston I’ve ever seen lol
