DJ Waller unshockingly transferring to Kentucky
Everyone and their mother knew about the tampering, but seems to be official now. Going from likely being at least a rotation CB on one of the best defenses in the country to Kentucky for a few extra bucks (that apparently he may not even get) is certainly a choice
I’ve got a former high school classmate acting like the three portal pickups UK has picked up is gonna bring to elite status or something. If you’ve never lived in Kentucky, you won’t understand how annoying UK fans are. Normally their basketball is good and when they have a decent football team it’s an intolerable fall and winter
Everybody's tampering y'all. I'd be shocked if we weren't.
You’ll know for sure when Pettiti punishes M for tampering at the suggestion of the rest of the conference coaches.
Oof... Warde will immediately suspend Sherrone for 5 games in the hope of avoiding bigger sanctions.
…UK’s schedule doesn’t look particularly promising for a team that gave up a 67% completion rate and 350+ yards of total offense per game last year. There’s maybe 2 gimme games, and 3-4 “oh god not in the face!” games.
I hope he gets the money he’s been promised. And I hope it’s worth it if he does.
He might be CB1 on Kentucky’s defense…but either 1) his coverage stats go down because the DL isn’t ending plays early, or 2) he does really well but has to watch from across the field as his teammates give up bombs.
I see one game like that, UGA. Texas isnt above losing to Kentucky in the slightest.
Nobody should be shocked by anything. If you can come up with it, do it. Except apparently Connor.
At this point, I think they should take the 5 most loyal players, have them transfer to dumpster fire teams and recruit players to come with them.
What else is there at this point to be unhappy about? No rules anymore
Just wanted to wish the best of luck to a future star corner, Jyaire Hill. Oh, and bye Waller.
Booooo
I get it, money is money but playing for Kentucky football or national champions Michigan football? Hmmm ok then.
Michigan cant compete with the Kansas and Kentuckys of the world in basketball because we are a football school. Yes im trolling but it does make you wonder.
What makes me wonder about what?
Good luck.
EDIT: wrong thread
Michigan approach towards NIL is embarrassing.
In life if you're 3rd teir at anything it will catch up to you.
Some instances I might agree with you. But caving to a 6 figure demand from a nobody 3 star who isn't even a locked in starter would have been an all time stupid move.
I would love for people to explain how retaining basically everyone of note outside of Sabb and Waller is "embarrassing", but my guess is that level of discourse isn't on the docket. Kentucky has portalled something like 25% of their team this offseason and are coming off a 7-6 season. Michigan's barely lost anyone and is coming off a national title. Feels like UM is maybe a tier or two higher than the doomsayers want them to be.
Plus, no actual evidence presented beyond speculation as to NIL being the reason they left.👍
Good luck to him. I suspect he'll be in contention for a starting spot at UK as well. It's a loss but UM has guys on the roster plus, hey, now they've got playing time to advertise to a guy who might want it.
The ethics of tampering and other aspects of this NIL landscape aside, I think the interesting part is less the disparity in overall resources and more how schools prioritize investments and how savvy they are at assessing investment worth. I don't follow Kentucky football at all. Maybe they're simply more aggressive about investing in less proven players. But maybe they also over-value guys like Waller (or one-time UM leans/commits like the Smiths or Brian Robinson). Same thing for Colorado and former UM leans/commits/players like Alex Graham, NHG, T. Upshaw, & Montrez Buford. If it's not obvious that the player is jumping to a program that's clearly richer, has greater prestige , or promises more immediate playing time, I think it's likely the root is basically speculative over-paying for positions of need or poor player valuation (for the new or old school). While I liked Waller and the loss of a CB is annoying, I trust the valuation of folks in UM's coaching room more than Kentucky's, and it may just be that they're more desperate for that position in the same way that we might be more desperate for a big reciever than Ole Miss is for a big CB.
Its the latter, and every valuation is relative. Someone out there would give Jack Tuttle 100K to come be their QB1, because their current QB1 is a bum.
Ya know, Amorion Walker should be a cautionary tale. I'd welcome him back, but had he stayed, he'd have that set of rings. Kinda makes you wonder what was going thru his mind as he watched the team standing under the confetti
He didnt enter the portal until after the Washington game.
Whoa. You are right...I was remembering last years not-great spring game and thinking he left right after. My bad.
Vince Morrow...Clink leaves and that's all needed for him make his move. Nasty nasty work. Something he does quite well.
Tampering, they offered him money through back channels.
Well, now we know how the schools that cheat will do their cheatin', and what sort of violations the NCAA will ignore as they tackle the scourge of recruits receiving too much free food while visiting.
However, this is way better than the prior cheatin', wherein some select schools could lavishly pay their players, and others had to worry about serving cream cheese with the bagels.

Big Waller fan and thought guy was going to be a star. Exactly what we want in a boundary corner. Sucks to lose a guy that you find as a 3 star, develop, and look like has chance to be NFL player.
Michigan's system of paying the guys who play and are upperclassman has worked but it sucks to lose these guys who may not be starters but are definitely next man up and will be all BIG caliber.
In Wallers defense Clink left. Don't know his relationship with Morgan and who knows how Wink comes across. Guy has has been out of college game for a long time.
Kentucky recruited him, all the guys who recruited him are still there, Stoops put guys in NFL, and if you can add an extra 100K a year then just might be a better situation for him.
Sucks because you have an illusion of dude loving the University and wanting to be there but lot of guys its gotta be a business decision. Always said if we lost Donovan Edwards to LSU or Bama for NIL money I'm done with sports.
DWJ though can't imagine he grew up dreaming of playing at he big house. Michigan has so many guys to pay can't imagine you can get into a bidding war for your second string. At this point just kind of happy he didn't bounce to another BIG school. Good luck as long as your interests don't interfere with ours.

since 2021 Kentucky has had 17 draft picks, Michigan has had more than double with 35
I think this is a bagman/instant starting role type thing. Kentucky is basically Maryland of the SEC. They'll never win anything of significance and play in a meaningless bowl game.
