Seemed to have such upside

Complaining about NIL when he hasn't even won the starting job or seen meaningful snaps is... something. But if that was such a big deal for him even after we were his best offer, he won a Natty his freshman year, and he was in the mix to start this year, then good riddance. He easily would've gotten that NIL this year if he continued how he's been playing

I'm all for these kids getting paid. Call me old school but unless you're someone like Bryce Underwood, you need to prove you deserve the big paycheck first.

If this is what happened, I'm with you. IF he had shown he was a proven commodity, show him the bag. But he has yet to start even one game.

Imagine if you applied for a job and they told you “for the first year we will pay you nothing, then based on how you do we can discuss your salary for year 2.”

I have a feeling you’d go somewhere else.

And your reply will likely be some form of “but it’s different for me, I earned it and these kids haven’t.”

Michigan won’t be taking in any CBs unless a new surprise player enters the portal. Players they would consider: pass rusher and wide receiver. If a QB enters that Michigan likes they could go after them, but currently they have no plans for that. Don’t plan on a bunch of transfers in 3/4 at most going into fall.

Played in 11 games last year as a freshman and in the running for the number 2 CB spot and decides to enter the portal?   It will be interesting to hear what happened.

As a reminder in every “ha, ha MSU has a player in the portal” thread I’ve cautioned the board to not get too giddy over their misfortunes until May 2nd when the portal closes.   Today I was told our players “aren’t going anywhere”.

This is why.  And we still have a week to go.

NIL is BS.

Need real world contracts or NIL isn't a real solution to anything. Are there any consequences if the checks don't clear or the player doesn't show up for an engagement.

How are schools supposed to manage rosters without managing NIL?

Anyone who thought we woul  dodge the portal by not losing at least a few contributors and potentially more than that after the countless staffing changes, you we're being naive.

Yeah, but tampering with someone not in the portal is not legal.  Tampering is highly illegal even in pro settings.  So if tampering is not punished, and players are not able to be under contract, the current system is many orders of magnitude worse than pro free agency.

I'd brace yourself for a world where tampering rules go the way of the NCAA's attempt to regulate NIL.  when the federal courts say the NCAA can't inhibit a player's right to earn for himself, it's not much of a leap to assume the courts will at some point say the NCAA can't prohibit collectives from talking with players about potential arrangements, no matter where a player is enrolled.  Unless and until some sort of contract arrangement is implemented, i'd expect for the guardrails to fall away completely, as opposed to thinking they'll be built up higher.

Yeah, a surprise but there were rumblings of guys looking to transfer after the spring game.  I guess he either didn't like his chances of getting CB2 or saw a better path to playing time elsewhere.

Wish him luck and, hell, he's leaving with a ring.

Hill looked just as good as CB2, and McBurrows played well and has more experience and is arguably a better fit for nickel.  And Edmond is a highly regarded recruit from this past season. It's hard these days to keep guys with starting aspirations if you can't promise a starting role, and so my guess is it's a combination of wanting to see the field plus a team willing to offer an NIL package for that spot while UM isn't necessarily going to commit those types of resources to a guy who's in the mix for a spot but with other capable guys also competing is my point.

Maybe, or the vast majority of his coaches on defense left and he saw a path to better playing time elsewhere.  When UM gets a guy in the portal (like May has) but also loses guys (like May has) do we assume the NIL only sorta works?

Maybe this is about money but my guess is some school saw a guy who played some meaningful snaps on a title team as a freshman and said they'd give me a clearer path to a starting spot and he jumped at it, especially since his coach (Clink) also left.

Saab was going to see a ton of snaps even when Moore was healthy. Waller probably was going to start. Michigan did a good job of keeping Mason Graham, Grant, and Will Johnson but they clearly aren't on the same level as Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State when it comes to NIL. I have no doubt Sherrone is pushing the issue. Now it's up to Warde, Santa, and others to get on board.

My guess is that Warde and Santa would be happy to have the top NIL program if the $$ were there. The $$ primarily come from alumni donors. Warde's and Santa's job is get $$ from donors for the school, (not necessarily for the athletes of the school). Rules do not allow them to transfer $$ from the school to the NIL collectives.

Of course, not every school follows the rules\

A non-trivial issue is that the big donors get a tax deduction for giving to the school, but not for giving to the NIL collective.

The best case for high NIL contributions is a large, rabid fan base for whom tax deductions aren't a big thing. Looking at you OSU and Alabama. For better or worse, the quality of Michigan students and degrees has allowed many of its graduates to care quite a lot about tax deductions.

Nonetheless, it still stinks when another school appears to be able to wave more money at one of our players or recruits.
