Complaining about NIL when he hasn't even won the starting job or seen meaningful snaps is... something. But if that was such a big deal for him even after we were his best offer, he won a Natty his freshman year, and he was in the mix to start this year, then good riddance. He easily would've gotten that NIL this year if he continued how he's been playing
I don't envy the kids or the coaches right now. Constant backchanneling, promises being made, hearing what so and so is getting, etc.
It takes a level of maturity to sift through it all and evaluate the total picture. Not everyone is going to have that.
And..so many people in your ear telling you to get paid now...or get paid more now.
There is no structure, no rules, no contracts...its unsustainable.
I'm all for these kids getting paid. Call me old school but unless you're someone like Bryce Underwood, you need to prove you deserve the big paycheck first.
If this is what happened, I'm with you. IF he had shown he was a proven commodity, show him the bag. But he has yet to start even one game.

Imagine if you applied for a job and they told you “for the first year we will pay you nothing, then based on how you do we can discuss your salary for year 2.”
I have a feeling you’d go somewhere else.
And your reply will likely be some form of “but it’s different for me, I earned it and these kids haven’t.”
He was supposed to be in a starting role.
Now they got to get a CB.
Michigan won’t be taking in any CBs unless a new surprise player enters the portal. Players they would consider: pass rusher and wide receiver. If a QB enters that Michigan likes they could go after them, but currently they have no plans for that. Don’t plan on a bunch of transfers in 3/4 at most going into fall.

But their depth at the position is not good.
Played in 11 games last year as a freshman and in the running for the number 2 CB spot and decides to enter the portal? It will be interesting to hear what happened.
We did lose the entire defensive coaching staff from when he was recruited.
Agreed - Much of recruiting is about relationships, as is choosing where to go for school. I don't blame him for wanting a change if he isn't as into this coaching staff.

So is he transferring to the Chargers?
April 24th, 2024 at 11:43 PM ^
Chargers are handcuffed with the rookie wage scale. Someone offered a big bag.
April 24th, 2024 at 11:19 PM ^
If that is the reason why wouldn't he have transferred when they all left or much sooner instead of after the spring game? To me it was some team saw him play in the spring game and liked what they saw, sees the potential and offered him $$$$$$$$.
He gets a new car and $25000 in cash from the new school
As a reminder in every “ha, ha MSU has a player in the portal” thread I’ve cautioned the board to not get too giddy over their misfortunes until May 2nd when the portal closes. Today I was told our players “aren’t going anywhere”.
This is why. And we still have a week to go.
April 24th, 2024 at 11:39 PM ^
I said grand and graham are not going anywhere.

"see i told ya" is always a good look
There have been rumors on some of the UM boards that NIL deals have not been honored. Maybe part of the reason. Certainly not because of playing time.
NIL is BS.
Need real world contracts or NIL isn't a real solution to anything. Are there any consequences if the checks don't clear or the player doesn't show up for an engagement.
How are schools supposed to manage rosters without managing NIL?
The first and only thought that entered my head about "what happened" was Michigan had been outbid for Waller's services.
April 24th, 2024 at 10:06 PM ^
$$$$$$$$!!!!
Anyone who thought we woul dodge the portal by not losing at least a few contributors and potentially more than that after the countless staffing changes, you we're being naive.
This one makes zero sense. He was slated to get a lot of playing time.
Welcome to 2024 College football
It actually make$ a certain kind of $ense...

Our fan base is the only fan base that stll thinks paying players is illegal or somehow bad.
Its unbelievable.
Yeah, but tampering with someone not in the portal is not legal. Tampering is highly illegal even in pro settings. So if tampering is not punished, and players are not able to be under contract, the current system is many orders of magnitude worse than pro free agency.

I'd brace yourself for a world where tampering rules go the way of the NCAA's attempt to regulate NIL. when the federal courts say the NCAA can't inhibit a player's right to earn for himself, it's not much of a leap to assume the courts will at some point say the NCAA can't prohibit collectives from talking with players about potential arrangements, no matter where a player is enrolled. Unless and until some sort of contract arrangement is implemented, i'd expect for the guardrails to fall away completely, as opposed to thinking they'll be built up higher.
Yeah, a surprise but there were rumblings of guys looking to transfer after the spring game. I guess he either didn't like his chances of getting CB2 or saw a better path to playing time elsewhere.
Wish him luck and, hell, he's leaving with a ring.
He looked to have it on lock after the spring game. Somebody saw that footage and ponied up for him.
Hill looked just as good as CB2, and McBurrows played well and has more experience and is arguably a better fit for nickel. And Edmond is a highly regarded recruit from this past season. It's hard these days to keep guys with starting aspirations if you can't promise a starting role, and so my guess is it's a combination of wanting to see the field plus a team willing to offer an NIL package for that spot while UM isn't necessarily going to commit those types of resources to a guy who's in the mix for a spot but with other capable guys also competing is my point.
But UM isn't committing the resources it's collectives doing so which is just dumb.
Odd. Hope he lands at a good spot
I guess Michigan NIL really isn't where it needs to be yet.
He was a three star recruit who played OK in limited time, so I doubt the NIL demand for him is that high. More likely that Jyaire Hill is the starter coming out of spring and Waller doesn't want to compete.
Maybe, or the vast majority of his coaches on defense left and he saw a path to better playing time elsewhere. When UM gets a guy in the portal (like May has) but also loses guys (like May has) do we assume the NIL only sorta works?
Maybe this is about money but my guess is some school saw a guy who played some meaningful snaps on a title team as a freshman and said they'd give me a clearer path to a starting spot and he jumped at it, especially since his coach (Clink) also left.
I was aassured tthat UM takes care of its players once they produce on the field, just ask Keon Saab.
Waller isn’t exactly proven and Saab was a backup,
Saab was going to see a ton of snaps even when Moore was healthy. Waller probably was going to start. Michigan did a good job of keeping Mason Graham, Grant, and Will Johnson but they clearly aren't on the same level as Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Ohio State when it comes to NIL. I have no doubt Sherrone is pushing the issue. Now it's up to Warde, Santa, and others to get on board.
Not sure if he was going to start. Hill seems to have passed him which is why he is leaving.
Saab wasn’t going to start either with Moore coming back.
OSU has lost a backup players too.
When OSU loses a backup player, they usually are further down the depth chart than Saab or Waller. Sure they lost Mccord but they ran him off.
They have lost several receivers, a RB, and linemen. They are losing backups too. Guys slated to play.
Forget it, he's rolling
This is phase 4 of OSU’s effort to finally beat Michigan. They are now giving NIL to other schools to entice Michigan players to enter the portal. So tough!
April 25th, 2024 at 12:53 AM ^
What phase was bring a PI firm
My guess is that Warde and Santa would be happy to have the top NIL program if the $$ were there. The $$ primarily come from alumni donors. Warde's and Santa's job is get $$ from donors for the school, (not necessarily for the athletes of the school). Rules do not allow them to transfer $$ from the school to the NIL collectives.
Of course, not every school follows the rules\
A non-trivial issue is that the big donors get a tax deduction for giving to the school, but not for giving to the NIL collective.
The best case for high NIL contributions is a large, rabid fan base for whom tax deductions aren't a big thing. Looking at you OSU and Alabama. For better or worse, the quality of Michigan students and degrees has allowed many of its graduates to care quite a lot about tax deductions.
Nonetheless, it still stinks when another school appears to be able to wave more money at one of our players or recruits.
Osu’s ad was actively fundraising for their nil collective from the alumni base, which is probably the major difference bw us the schools w big nil money pools.
Or the players, coaches, schools, and media get too greedy, turn this sport too much into the pros and college fans who were once loyal check out and the golden goose is cooked.
April 25th, 2024 at 12:11 PM ^
A ton of snaps is NOT starting. Not even close.
These guys want to be the man, to start, and to be guaranteed to be on the field in the biggest moments.
Keon was clearly not going to get that. Of course, now we wish he'd come back!
