It happened within sight of the Sheraton where the Atlanta Braves used to stay for Spring Training until one of their prospects was killed outside of the hotel.  They moved the next year.

Your comment is mindbogglingly ignorant in several ways.

Firstly, the Constitution is as relevant as ever. Not only did it set up the structure of our current government, but it gave us the Bill of Rights both of which  are over 200 years old, yet are still are of central importance to this day. 

Secondly, the Constitution has this thing called "amendments". It's not a static document. It can and has been altered. It's an malleable document.

Thirdly, we have tried banning drugs and alcohol. It didn't work out so well. Why the hell would you think it would work for guns? If people want something they'll get it in an open society such as ours.

I agree that populations should be able to defend themselves against tyranny & invasions, but with the advanced weaponry that our military has, it seems nearly useless to imagine standing up to a coup (or whatever such enactment of tyranny we could imagine, against which the population could pose an armed defense) with the firearms that civilians can acquire.

Can you give me a better view of your perspective that might counter my understanding?

(As with all internet posts on controversial topics, it should be noted that I am legitimately interested in learning more about different viewpoints and not just making an "I am very smart" response. I think we have more of a chance of achieving the former here than some other places.)

The Taliban and Al Queda have stood up to the US military just fine. However, I think we would see the US military split(like it did jsut before the Civil War).

 

That said,I think we have far more to fear from citizens than the government. Citizens can with relative ease acquire weapons in large enough numbers to wage a guerrilla war in the interior of this country.They can also become terrorists.

Youre right. I shouldnt have name called. That being said. how did the second amendment save us against pearl harbor and 911. How many innocent people have died because of it. It may have prevented foreign tyranny but you'll have a heck of a time proving it given our distance from anytyrannical threat. However I can prove many more cases in which innocence was destroyed because of the second amendment. Further more, how will the second amendment protect us from a dirty bomb or mass contamination of a water supply. It has done much more harm than good. Am i still wrong wrong wrong?

You do realize that governments killed 262,000,000 unarmed civilians in the 20th century alone.  It's pretty disgusting to think they did this.  The founding fathers had a pretty good idea of the type of people that are drawn to government positions.

Sorry, I thought that was abundantly clear. See like, "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility...promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity..." Was that supposed to apply to the hundreds of our aboriginanl tribes, thousands of slaves and women? Because in the Declaration of Independence, "We hold these truths to be self evident, That all men are created equal", certainly did not. See I was ponting out that the comment held very little water in the context of the argument because so many people have parished innocently because of the 2nd amendment,  instilled for the protection from redcoats more than 200 years ago, when they used muscots that took a minute to reload as aposed to fire arms that can cut down trees. But I digress.
