Mods can we get this added to the thread?

Up to 70k already. Somebody donated 10k. I assumed some of the football program heavy hitters would make big donations.

Now $84,000. Let's keep it going!
February 28th, 2024 at 10:08 AM ^
Crud, I just met with someone yesterday dealing with stage 4 colon cancer. I thought it was so sad, particularly because he's only in his mid-30s. Roh is two years younger than the guy I met! Tragic. I pray for his family.

Fuck cancer. Get a Colonoscopy.
February 28th, 2024 at 2:40 PM ^
No one gets a colonscopy at that age, unless they have certain rare medical conditions.
February 28th, 2024 at 4:21 PM ^
Or a family history.
February 28th, 2024 at 6:01 PM ^
But younger people can use Colongaurd. Crap in a box and send it in to get tested. If it is positive, you insurance company will probably pay for a colonoscopy.
February 28th, 2024 at 9:19 PM ^
I looked at the website today and took the screener and was not able to get Cologuard, so there must still be some criteria to meet
February 29th, 2024 at 12:20 PM ^
I'm pretty sure you have to be older than 45 with family history or 50 without. Something along those lines.
February 29th, 2024 at 12:19 PM ^
Cologuard is considered preventative screening, there are no out of pocket expenses for the patient. If there is a family history and or patient is 45 yo or greater and asymptomatic, colonoscopy is also considered screening with no out of pocket expenses. However, if cologuard comes back positive then a colonoscopy is considered diagnostic and there may be out of pocket expenses. The same is true for an initial colonoscopy. If during the screening procedure a biopsy is performed the colonoscopy is then coded as diagnostic and there may be out of pocket expenses.

Had my first one at 18 and 20 more since then. Every other year now. I’m 52 and praying my Crohns stays in remission to lessen the scar tissue that can lead to cancer🙏
February 28th, 2024 at 5:15 PM ^
Everyone should but the old rule was to wait until you are 50 before your first colonoscopy. But some people can develop polyps in their 20s and it only takes 10 years to develop colon cancer. I would get one by 40 and if you have a family history than 30.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:11 AM ^
Oh man that's awful. Please get a colonoscopy. After Jamie Samuelson passed, I got mine at 48. Not a fun process but it can save your life.

The prep day is annoying, especially if you aren't a fan of jello to begin with, other than that the procedure felt like one of the best naps I've ever taken.
Just go get one guys and gals.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:21 AM ^
Agree. The procedure is nothing. The prep was a bit of a challenge because I'm not the type to skip meals but I got through it.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
If only skipping meals was the worst part about it...
February 28th, 2024 at 10:25 AM ^
Totally this.
Prep is horrible, but it's an evil we've all experienced in having diarrhea. Not a big deal.
The medication they give to knock you out is overtly awesome. As you said, best nap ever and you feel totally refreshed after. I've had a few, and it's easier than the dentist. Stay safe and enjoy the best rest you've ever had.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:48 AM ^
The prep is definitely the part that sucks, especially if you are someone who eats a good amount and at decent intervals during a normal day. I lift weights everyday and do not skip meals at all during a normal day.
February 28th, 2024 at 3:33 PM ^
Exactly this. I have to get an endoscopy every year for another condition and it comes w the same knockout drug. I actually look forward to the rest every year. It also made me realize how a person like Michael Jackson could get hooked.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:26 AM ^
Yeah, what they said ^^^
The one potential downside to the actual day-of is if you get a nurse who tries to sell you out. When I was going under, she mentioned to my girlfriend "honey, you can ask him anything right now and he'll be 100% honest", but apparently I babbled "you're the best girlfriend ever and i wuv uuuuu....."
For real though, schedule one every few years, especially once you're on the wrong end of 50.
February 28th, 2024 at 3:46 PM ^
I don't know if happens to everyone but I woke up feeling like someone tried to pump me up like a balloon. The worst gas pains I could imagine... Didn't last long though.
February 28th, 2024 at 2:12 PM ^
I found out that there are some days easier to get colonoscopy scheduled. A few years, I was scheduling months ahead and the clerk suggested "how about Monday in Feb?" - and without thinking, I agreed, only to later realize that was the Monday after the Superbowl. Turns out there are a lot of slots open!
February 28th, 2024 at 5:51 PM ^
Check for phone messages and emails before you start to prep.
You may have a message saying that your procedure was postponed to another day. It is hard to stop the prep activity once you have started. I guess in the day of smartphones this isn't likely a problem but back when I had an answering machine . . . and I get home from work and start the prep WITHOUT checking the answering machine . . .and then after I started the prep, I see the red light on the machine . . .
February 28th, 2024 at 7:09 PM ^
I’m 42 and I’ve already had two. Not that bad at all honestly.
(Before you ask, I’ve had to have them for specific medical reasons; I don’t just do it for fun)
February 28th, 2024 at 10:31 PM ^
Question since I'm clueless. Does the sphincter get destroyed and if so, how long does it take to recover?
February 28th, 2024 at 10:56 PM ^
I had a colonoscopy a few years ago (in my 30s) to rule out anything serious when I started having some random stomach issues out of nowhere.
I was nervous about the prep because typically if you have diarrhea it only takes 2 or 3 bowel movements before you are raw and burning. So knowing there was going to be many bowel movements during prep, I was worried about how painful it might be and wondering if I was going to end up bleeding - not to mention the typical stomach cramps that come with diarrhea.
From my experience, none of that was an issue. I’d imagine this is where your diet leading up to the prep helps play a role. But I believe I ended up having about 15 bowel movements that night/morning and never felt very raw. Additionally, I didn't get any of the stomach cramps. It was just an, “oh, I have to go” feeling, you sit down, give a little push and it literally pisses out.
Don't get me wrong - it’s no fun. It becomes physically and mentally exhausting going that many times not to mention the crap you have to drink. I had a couple of bouts of nausea. But it wasn’t nearly as bad as I had imagined.
And like others have said - the procedure itself is oddly enjoyable. Being put under was very soothing and you wake up as high as a kite - I couldn’t stop laughing for about 10 minutes.

Wife and I are both colon cancer survivors (so far!). Me Stage 2, wife Stage 3.
Get your colonoscopy.
February 28th, 2024 at 5:47 PM ^
Congrats buddy! Stage 3C survivor here! 3.5 years. The anxiety nearly destroyed me for 2.5 of those years.

Here’s something that I wish more people knew: the degree of annoyance and difficulty of the procedure is ALL about the doctor’s preferences for the prep and you have a choice to do it the way that doctor wants to, or find another doctor who doesn’t do it that way. I’ve had three or four now and only the first was anything more than a minor annoyance. Why? Because that first doctor insisted on the “jug of fun” prep while all the others didn’t. Downed the two little bottles of prep, consumed just clear liquids, done.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:34 AM ^
I did not know that, I had the jug, the 2nd half I had to wake up at 3am and chug because my appointment was at 9am.
It wasn't the worst thing in the world because as a guy with young kids who never has time anymore, I had a throwback play video games all night.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:33 PM ^
Ahh yes... Jugs of liquid chalk. Never knew something could be so dry and gritty while being a liquid!
February 28th, 2024 at 10:51 AM ^
I had to do the two jugs and was nearly in tears towards the end because I didn't think I could get it down. It was worth it but still.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:02 AM ^
Put powdered lemonade in the jug of fun and it is not to bad (relatively speaking)
February 28th, 2024 at 12:29 PM ^
When you prep for a colonoscopy, eat foods that are high in water content the two to three days before. There will be less solids in your colon to clear. The last time I prepped for a colonoscopy, I ate nothing but plain microwaved potatoes (75-80% water) and there was very little cramping.
February 28th, 2024 at 5:25 PM ^
My last colonoscopy was much better, with just laxatives. My first two were with the 2 full jugs, just awful trying to drink all of that stuff.
February 28th, 2024 at 10:54 AM ^
I think for some it also depends on cost since as of my last one my fairly good insurance covered the procedure but not the prep. I took the pills last time as it seemed more convenient and I actually thought it was worse as i was downing my 10th horse pill in a 10 minute span. I've never had my doctor insist on 1 type of prep however, but I also ask for my options when scheduling.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:30 AM ^
Thank you for sharing this. The jug of "fun" is anything but. I'd rather not eat for a week than do that again. What are some of the other options that you found more "pleasant"? That said, even if the jug is the only option, it is 1000% worth it.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:13 PM ^
I will add a couple of comfort tips.
Applying a lubricant can help ease discomfort from defecating/wiping frequently. Also using a hemorrhoid cream/wipe in between is helpful.
I agree with others that stated that the procedure is completely comfortable, as odd as it would seem. No discomfort following the procedure (I was out for the procedure itself).
February 28th, 2024 at 12:50 PM ^
I pulled my little 13 inch TV into the bathroom with my jug and watched the opening day of March Madness. Made the experience a bit more tolerable.
Procedure was just fine. The “twilight” stuff they knock you out with is the best.
Seeing this news though, might be time for another visit. RIP Craig.
February 28th, 2024 at 2:13 PM ^
Mine was mix a bottle of Mirolax with a jug of lemon-lime Gatorade and then take that in 8oz servings over the span of a few hours + take 4 Dulcolax tablets. It was easy peasy.
Wife's was the jug of fun and she was miserable.
February 28th, 2024 at 5:30 PM ^
My last colonoscopy a year ago was with these laxative pills. No plastic jugs with 2 pouches of powder to mix in the jug. Prep was much, much easier.
February 28th, 2024 at 12:45 PM ^
Just did my first this past October. Not sure what the "just of fun" prep is... but my doctor gave me options, and without much research on my part, I opted for the 2 rounds of 7 doses of mirolax 15 minutes apart and one dulcolax with 3 hours in between after being on clear liquids from the previous night. As others have said, it was a minor inconvenience at worse.... not a big deal at all.
February 28th, 2024 at 1:31 PM ^
It is a two gallon or so jug with some crystals in it that you fill with water. You drink 8 ounces at a time spaced apart by x number of minutes. It has the same effect I would assume as the other cleansing options. It tastes kind of salty and "plasticy" which initially is not so bad, but becomes less and less tolerable after the first few rounds. Your option sounds way better.
February 28th, 2024 at 1:16 PM ^
Can't agree with this more. I had heard horror stories about prep. Don't get me wrong - it wasn't pleasant - but it wasn't nearly as bad as what I had expected. I had a light diet starting 3 days before, fasted the day before, and had OTC medications (no chalk) starting ~16 hours before.
I was dreading the entire process and put it off multiple times, but it really wasn't that bad. Get it done - the peace of mind is worth it.
And co-sign the comments about the sedative. That part, at least, was great.
February 28th, 2024 at 5:50 PM ^
One bottle of Miralax mixed with apple juice or Gatorade and drink. Glass every half hour for 5 hours. Works better than any bottle of lemon flavored motor oil and tastes like normal apple juice and Gatorade.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:01 AM ^
Got mine at 45. Prep was overrated, sure I was hungry but otherwise not horrible.
February 28th, 2024 at 11:05 AM ^
Yea it was not terrible..I ate very light the whole week before so just slamming the liquid was the tough part
